Wind Power and Fashion

Wind power and fashion?? Do you mean to say that tall majestic functional wind turbines are now being seen as not just iconic, but as expressions of fashion? Are we going to have wind-hippy turbine tower-huggers instead of tree-huggers?

No. This is a new partnership between what may initially seem unlikely bedfellows: In one corner of the bed, the leading renewable energy trade association RenewableUK

In the other corner, we have Rapanui Clothing, the award-winning eco-friendly fashion brand, famous for recently opening a new factory on the Isle of Wight powered entirely by wind energy.

In a bold move to make a connection between wind power and fashion, RenewableUK has today announced its campaigning arm Action for Renewables is to partner with  Rapanui Clothing to produce a new line of wind-inspired T-shirts, such as the one shown below

The new partnership was announced yesterday; on the same day as a pop-up event in central London, “Works of Wind”, showcased a range of sustainable and renewable-inspired fashion and art.

Maf Smith, Deputy Chief Executive of RenewableUK said:

“Wind energy is at the cutting edge of action to keep the UK’s lights on and cut carbon and it’s doing it in style. Not only can installing a wind turbine help save businesses money on their electricity bills, but wind power can also contribute to the creation of truly sustainable products as the companies taking part in this pop-up event are demonstrating. The world of fashion is also embracing clean energy by using the imagery of wind turbines as a symbol of modernity.”

This is not the first time fashion and wind has held hands/blades. Fashion-followers will recall that Chanel’s 2013 Summer fashion show featured wind turbines on the catwalk. I wonder whether we may start seeing wind turbine hats at Ladies Day at Ascot and wind-powered torches on hats for the walk home from the theatre or pub on a windy night? Why Not?!!
